Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Head on down to Gulf Shores, Alabama for the Waterway Village Zydeco & Crawfish Festival and 5K/1mile run. Fun activities, fantastic food, and some of the best Zydeco bands in the south will be on hand, and they plan to “laissez les bons temps rouler” (“let the good times roll” for those of you not familiar with Mardi Gras) all day long.
The April 16th festival kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with the 5K run and 1 mile fun run/walk. Work up an appetite, then stay for the free beer and refreshments after the race. Part of the proceeds from the race go to Furrever Homes, a local animal rescue, so you’ll be supporting a great cause in addition to the fun you’ll have. Registration for the race is $25 through April 15th, $30 the day of the race.
Pots will begin boiling at 10:00 a.m., and shortly thereafter you’ll be able enjoy hot, juicy cajun crawfish. Do you suck the heads? Well, if you don’t, you should! Vendors and exhibits begin at 10:00 as well, and include arts and crafts booths, children’s activities, and an authentic 80 foot shrimp boat. Crawfish races are planned throughout the day, and if you’ve never seen one, it would be worth your trip for that experience alone. All of this, set to the infectious rhythms of Zydeco. Be sure to wear your dancing shoes – you’ll need them for sure.
The festival will be held at Waterway Village, 225 East 24th Avenue in Gulf Shores, under the Intercoastal Canal bridge. Admission is free, and the weather is supposed to be perfect on Saturday. Join us, won’t you? And remember, you can live here, too!
